TII’s Language Center at HBKU Shares Arabic Language Expertise with Joutsenon Opisto, Finland Under New Agreement

Two-year agreement promotes Arabic language learning and teacher training exchanges

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) mission to enrich communities through interdisciplinary educational experiences has been boosted by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between its Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) and Joutsenon Opisto, Finland.

The two institutions agreed to build a partnership in different academic areas with the aim of starting an exchange between the TII Language Center and Joutsenon Opisto that develops teaching expertise and Arabic language learning. Potential opportunities for cooperation include face-to-face training and other academic activities.

Leveraging the training expertise at the TII Language Center, the MoU objectives include the development of teaching and tutoring activities in the Arabic language for Opisto. Other areas of cooperation identified are the delivery of Arabic language courses at all levels for students, including advanced and business Arabic, and training for their teachers.

Speaking after the signing, Dr. Nima Nazari, Director of the Language Centre at CHSS, said: “We’re looking forward to working with Joutsenon Opisto to develop a partnership that leads to meaningful academic exchanges in several areas. We are seeing the demand to learn Arabic growing, and we welcome the chance for TII to apply its strengths in language teaching and learning to enhance their programs. We are certain to have an innovative and creative partnership over the next two years.”

Ulla Huhtilainen, CEO of Joutseno College, Joutsenon Opisto, also said: “We are very pleased to establish this agreement with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at HBKU. At Opisto, we support a society-renewing, transformative learning approach to learning, which we see reflected in the programs led by CHSS. We are therefore delighted to have this new framework for cooperation in place that will lead to sharing expertise and experience and offer our students and teaching faculty rewarding growth opportunities especially in Arabic language competency.”
