HBKU TII’s Translation and Training Center Unveils Continuing Professional Development Workshops

Open to the public for registration, upcoming classes will cover specialty areas in translation and interpreting

With a focus on providing practicing translators, interpreters, and communication specialists with opportunities for continuing professional development, Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU)’s Translation and Training Center (TTC) is offering a series of workshops for the community beginning this September, now open for registration.

The workshops cover a wide range of specialties in translation and interpreting, covering best practices in key sectors where practitioners play a crucial role, including sports, business and finance, and legal translation. This academic year, the workshops are a mix of face-to-face and online delivery.

The specialized workshops offered by TTC, which is part of the Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) at HBKU’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), provide practitioners with opportunities to enhance and expand their skill sets and competencies. The workshop content is also geared toward orienting participants on key technological innovations and the newer methodologies being used in the field.

The workshop cycle will run continually from September 5, 2021, to March 28, 2022. Among the sessions offered face-to-face are Learn Interpreting; SDL Trados: Translating; Master the Technique of Notetaking; and Business and Finance Translation. Online offerings include Professional Translation Basics; Business Arabic Writing 2021; Translating Sports; Legal Translation; Business Arabic Writing; Medical Translation; and Revision and Quality Assurance.

Nada Al-Mahmeed, Director of TTC, TII, HBKU, said: “We are excited to begin returning to in-person learning at TTC, and it means we can offer participants the many benefits of classroom instruction while still reaping the advantages of remote learning, which expands the reach of our workshops. Qatar continues to grow as a hub of business and cultural diversity, and we are more committed than ever to serving the needs of busy professionals and university students in Qatar and the region. Our regular and tailored workshops for the community throughout the academic year provide a solid foundation for them to learn best practices to enhance their roles in professional settings. The workshops also deliver on our aim of building capacity in vital sectors in Qatar and the region to improve the quality of translation and interpretation services delivered.”
