Basic Portuguese

If you wish to learn some basic Portuguese without engaging in a longer regular program, this 20-hour course is the right one for you! It is designed to provide students with basic linguistic competence to understand and use daily expressions aimed at satisfying immediate needs. Within contextualized everyday settings, you practice greeting people, introducing yourself and others, sharing personal information, interacting in a café or a restaurant, getting around town and shopping.

Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of Portuguese is expected.

Section 1: Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:00 pm – 8:40 pm

Speaking Practice and Consolidation: Beginner level

Would you like to practice the Portuguese you have learned so far? Or have you studied Portuguese in the past and wish to refresh it? Than join us: let’s talk Portuguese! This course is all about speaking the language in real-life situations. Find your way in cities like Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro, book a hotel, order food and drinks in restaurants and cafés, go shopping, introduce yourself in a job interview, make plans with your friends (and remember to consider the weather!), tell them about your travel experiences, and a lot more… Depending on the topic, you either work with all your classmates or in smaller groups organized per level.

Prerequisites: Portuguese Beginner 1 or Portuguese Beginner 2 at this program (or equivalent).

Section 1: Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:00 pm – 8:40 pm

Speaking Practice and Consolidation: Pre-intermediate/Intermediate levels

If you have reached the pre-intermediate level (at least), you are ready to handle somewhat more complicated conversations. Join us and challenge yourself! Within contextualized everyday settings, practice asking and answering questions, sharing information and giving advice.  Express your thoughts and opinions about eating habits, sports, health and everyday life in different countries; discuss weather maps and forecasts; practice shopping, as well as exchanging and returning merchandise, complaining and expressing your opinion about the quality of the service; talk about popular festivities and traditions; compare vacation experiences and plans; discuss current topics, such as environmental issues, social media, the challenges of aging… Depending on the topic, you either work with all your classmates or in smaller groups organized per level.

Prerequisites: Portuguese Pre-intermediate 1 or Portuguese Pre-intermediate 2 or any of the Intermediate sublevels at this program (or equivalent).

Section 1: Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:30 am – 12.10 pm
