To set the strategic plan and budget for the Graduate Studies. To monitor and manage the full range of MAs and doctoral degrees offered by the Translation and Interpreting Studies Department, ensuring alignment to all approved objectives and targets in order to achieve high performance in terms of growth, efficiency, effectiveness and achievement of the college’s vision and mission. The Head of the Department will be responsible of delivering some components of the academic programs and ensuring that both MA and PhD students receive appropriate training in their chosen specialism.

Requirements:

  • Full or Associate Professor
  • A completed PhD in Translation Studies or related fields.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in the education sector.
  • Experience of designing courses at graduate level.
  • Experience as Program Director or head.
  • Excellent teaching skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Familiarity with generic and specialist IT applications.
  • Fluency in English and at least one other language offered by the Institute; fluency in additional languages is preferred (Arabic, French, Spanish, German etc.)

Key Results Area

  • Set the overall strategy and direction of the Masters’ programs in coordination with the Dean of the College.
  • Play a main role in student recruitment and outreach activities by attending local and regional events, class visits, and fairs, as well as HBKU and CHSS events hosted on campus.
  • Lead the academic presentations, activities, and sessions planned during New Student Orientation.
  • Oversee department’s committees including, but not limited to: validation committee and faculty hiring committee.
  • Hold biweekly meetings with faculty and provide mentorship to junior faculty.
  • Prepare the business plan and annual budget for the Masters’ Program in line with HBKU guidelines in order to meet the overall objectives of the CHSS and HBKU.
  • Develop the Masters’ Program’s curricula in coordination with CHSS Curriculum Committee as well as the program coordinators of the relevant programs and advice on the course offerings.
  • Set the course sequencing and scheduling, ensuring that it meets all the standards and guidelines of the Academic Program.
  • Supervise MA and PhD students.            
  • Participate in the selection and testing of potential students, ensuring that they meet the requirements for admission.  
  • Update the Student Handbook on an annual basis, and hand over the final version to the marketing team for printing.
  • Develop and maintain Graduate Studies reputation amongst Faculty, staff, students and regulatory/official bodies to ensure that the Graduate Studies as well as the Institute continue to set high standards within the community and internationally.
  • Develop faculty professional development plan for the academic year.
  • Update Departmental policies in accordance to CHSS and HBKU policies.
  • Participate in the accreditation process for the Masters’ Program and facilitate access to all information requested by the accreditation committee.

To manage the Interpreting Unit within the Translation and Training Center (TTC), through providing interpreting services to TII clients and coordinating with all the actors involved in interpreting service provision (BPA owners, freelancers, technicians, clients, QF Finance …). S/he will also have to lead interpreting workshops, supervise Master students on the Internship Program, and coordinate the use of the interpreting room.

Key Result Areas:

  • Manage the Interpreting Unit.
  • Coordinate with contractors providing interpreting services and equipment on behalf of TII.
  • Perform the entire spectrum of interpreting services from English into Arabic and vice versa
  • Provide support and coaching for MA students wishing to learn and practice interpreting
  • Receive and process interpreting requests from internal and external clients, including sending quotations, selecting interpreters, following up with clients, processing payments, and requesting feedback after the provision of services
  • Put together interpreting teams to serve in various events according to their skills.
  • Plan and monitor the work flow of interpreting projects from A to Z.
  • Apply the quality assurance criteria adopted by TTC.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with contractors, freelancers, and BPA owners.
  • Design and deliver interpreting-related workshops for the community.
  • Keep abreast of and adopt current interpreting methodologies to ensure that the Department and the College remain at the forefront of the services market.
  • Define interpreting needs and provide relevant guidance in terms of purchasing equipment and tools.

Key Qualifications:

  • A Mater’s degree in interpreting/translation or equivalent. (related fields)
  • A solid, sustained background in the interpreting/translation business.
  • 5 years of experience in the professional field.
  • Knowledge of the latest interpreting services, technologies, methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of local and internal protocols.
  • Knowledge of local and internal market needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

The Director of Language Center sets the strategy, business plan and budget for the Department as well as monitoring and directing all educational and paid services offered by the department and ensuring alignment to all approved objectives and targets to achieve high performance in terms of growth, efficiency and effectiveness and achievement of the College’s vision and mission.

Key Result Areas:

  • Set the overall strategy and direction of the LC, in coordination with the Dean.
  • Prepare the business plan and annual budget and ensure a sound and achievable growth targets.
  • Oversee curricular development to ensure that courses offered meet the standards and requirements of the Institute; approve course scope & syllabus, textbooks, and other purchases of teaching materials and equipment; review curriculum on an annual basis.
  • Represent CHSS-TII and the LC at local, regional and international conferences as well as with similar institutions in order to develop and maintain strong relationships for potential future collaboration and development of the LC and growth of its reputation.
  • Participate in LC accreditation activities and facilitate access to information requested by the accreditation committee.
  • Oversee and monitor the work of Language Instructors, and provide any needed support.
  • Oversee and approve course schedule & timetables to ensure that they are adequately planned.
  • Oversee course registration, including determination of prerequisites and placement testing.
  • Oversee the language courses to ensure they fulfill the requirements of the course syllabus and curriculum and that students are prepared for any related examinations.
  • Teach language and lead Language Instructors professional development as needed or required.
  • Provide regular progress reports on activities and developments to the Dean for review and decision making.
  • Keep abreast of and adopt current language teaching methodologies; ensure that Language Instructors receive appropriate professional development.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and onboard Language Instructors and staff and evaluate work on a regular basis.
  • Monitor and manage Language Center compliance with CHSS-TII policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Address issues that may arise in regard to students and take appropriate action to resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the Dean.

Key Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Education, Translation & Interpretation, Management, or a related field.
  • 8 years of language teaching and management experience; university-level teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience developing and administering a budget and developing and monitoring a business plan.
  • Extensive knowledge of language pedagogy best practices and teaching technologies.
  • Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  • Outstanding organization, planning, and time management skills.
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to draft and edit a variety of written reports & communications and articulate ideas clearly and concisely. Arabic proficiency strongly preferred; proficiency in other languages is advantage.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications

The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) is part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Qatar Foundation. It was founded in 2012 with a remit to build capacity in Qatar and the region and to function as a physical and virtual space that delivers sophisticated translator and interpreter education, high-level training in a range of languages, and quality translation and interpreting services of the highest international standards. Requirements:

Key Result Areas:

  • Set the overall strategy and direction of Translation and Training Center in coordination with the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS).
  • Prepare the business plan and annual budget for Translation and Training Center in line with the guidelines that meet the overall objective of the Center, TII, CHSS, and HBKU.
  • Monitor the annual budget, highlight any variances and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to maintain the assigned budget.
  • Maintain Translation Services culture and reputation amongst staff, customers, key stakeholders and regulatory/official bodies to ensure that the paid professional services as well as the CHSS continue to set high standards within the community and internationally.
  • Research and identify the translation needs of the market and recommend services to be provided to enhance the Translation and Training Center offerings to serve a larger audience and meet financial objectives.
  • Ensure a fruitful collaboration with other Departments at CHSS, especially as regards the implementation of appropriate student mentorship/internship programs.
  • Ensure good relationships are maintained between the Translation and Training Center and other local, regional and international institutions.
  • Keep abreast of and adopt current translation methodologies to ensure Translation and Training Center and the College remain at the forefront of the market.
  • Provide regular progress and statistical reports on activities and progress of the Translation and Training Center, ensuring it meets the required technical and financial targets.
  • Oversee the studio/lab and all related equipment and software at the Translation and Training Center, ensuring that they are functioning effectively and efficiently as required.
  • Oversee and monitor the activities of the staff and functions and take action relating to any required improvements to ensure that the outcomes meet the objectives of the Translation and Training Center section and the College.
  • Participate in the hiring and evaluation of staff, ensuring fairness and equality and that the Translation and Training Center acquires the required skills.
  • Monitor and manage the Translation and Training Center’s academic and paid services, ensuring operational compliance with the Institute’s and College’s policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Attend and represent Translation and Training Center in local, regional and international conferences as well as at similar institutions and develop and maintain strong relationships for future collaboration and promotion of the Institute.
  • The candidate is responsible for all staff and other resources at the section.
  • Abide by all QF, HBKU, CHSS and the Institute’s policies and procedures and ensure all subordinate staff abide by the same.
